Whatever happened to plug'n'play?
on 8 July 2011
External hard-drives are great. You can load them up with all your files, transport them easily and plug them in to whatever computer you want, in order to work on your files.
Not this one.
WD, in their infinite wisdom, decided that being a plain usb mass storage device was not good enough for them. Any time you plug this device into a windows PC it will nag you to install an SES driver. Not very handy of you're using a work, university or public PC and have no chance of installing new drivers. Without the SES driver it may mount as read-only - a problem we haven't managed to fix yet. The WD forums are awash with complaints about this driver nonsense, and the 'unremovable' virtual CD.
On the positive side, it works fine under Linux (Kubuntu 9.10). No driver issues here.
