I'm amazed no one has reviewed this yet. No music collection is complete without
these albums, along with those collected in vols 2 and 3. The closest parallel
perhaps is somewhere on a line linking the Miles Davis of Bitch's Brew and Jack Johnson
vintage and the James Brown of The Payback: more funky than Miles, more jazzy than James,
and with the hard edge of Defunkt or James Blood Ulmer.
But what really clinches it are the sound and the price. Concerning the latter, it works
out overall at about 2 quid an album, and concerning the former the recordings are among
the most pulsating around. Audiophile in the truest sense of the word listening to
these albums is a real "event". The engineers responsible for both the original sessions
and the remastering can be proud.
