Al Pacino at his best. He is a retired, blind Colonel who is angry with everything and everyone including his kind, long suffering niece and her family, whom he lives with in an annex. His arrogance and violent outbursts of explosive temper is hard to watch at times especially when it's directed at the young Baird student, Charlie who has taken on the unenviable job of looking after him for the Thanksgiving weekend. The colonel has planned to travel to New York for a weekend of luxury and pleasure culminating in his suicide. This is not apparent at first to Charlie who has been unwittingly dragged along to accompany the colonel on his quest. It soon becomes apparent that the colonel loves woman above all and his very detailed, sensual eulogies often embarrass the young Charlie. The colonel is a heavy drinker and Charlie's task of trying to limit his consumption is futile. Behind the scenes is the drama taking place back at Baird where Charlie has been put in an impossible situation. He was one of two people to witness an incident involving three fellow students. The Principal who was at the heart of this incident has ordered the two boys to give a full disclosing account of the event or face expulsion. Here lies Charlie's dilemma, should he "rat" on his students to save his scholarship place at college or not say anything and lose all. This becomes known to the Colonel during the weekend.
There are many noteworthy scenes throughout the story but for me the tango scene with Al Pacino and an English woman waiting for her tardy fiancé is one of the most sensual moments captured on film. Truly breathtaking.
Good prevails over bad and the ending is a joy to see.
A feel good film with a truly remarkable cast.
