I first bought Empire Total War on it's day of release. Back then, it had great potential, but was riddled with game breaking bugs and annoying AI.

Thankfully after numerous patches and improvements, the game is much more polished. With the Napoleon expansion, it get's even better.

It was always going to be difficult for the devs to create a Total War game involving predominantly ranged combat. The AI mechanics and strategy are much more complex when you line up 10 musket units, 2 cannons and a load of cavalry against each other. But Empire/Napoleon does a good job on the whole (though it's very easy to kill Generals with cannons from miles away).

The navel battles are enjoyable, though they can be a little complex when dealing with a large group of ships. I find it easiest to concentrate on controlling just the flagship or maybe two of the bigger ships of the line when you have a fleet of 10 or so.

Diplomacy was poor on release but operates much better now, especially in Napoleon.

Graphics are good and there are some amusing lines/animations when you zoom right into units.

Empire probably has the longer gameplay of the two games, with more scope for... well.... an empire. But Napoleon is the more dynamic and action packed.

Well worth purchasing for returning players who were put off by the glitches when first released.

Empire is, in my opinion the best total war game. It gives you the freedom to fight in 3 different theatres, in a period with really cool weaponry. Napoleon is more modern, but only one theatre. Both brilliant games in their own right. Using massed artillery is so much fun!

good, but buildings are not great graphics, very playable, hard to finish in the games time scale, so carry on as long as you like.

I avoided having the big let down when this game was released so thankfully by the time I played nearly all the bugs had been ironed out.

This total war took a completely different turn from others and went into the age of industry and where armies pounded each other with rifle and cannon. It also added ship combat. Although this isn't my favorite total war game it is still fun to play.

You can play as any of the great nations of Europe during the period that each was trying to create a world wide empire for themselves, although there are also the tribes of the Americas and one of the factions in India to also play.
With Napoleon you can play as any of the counties involved in the wars with France when Napoleon became Emperor and tried to build his empire, with the stage being set in the Entire of Europe or in the Peninsula War between Britain, Portugal, Spain and France.

The game is fun, especially when playing with mods such as darthmod. However do be warned that combat take a lot longer than in previous games.
