THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK
on 10 April 2017
I had been looking around to buy this lens and get the best price I could find. I 'clicked' and the lens was delivered on time and the tracking system worked very well. I wanted it for a holiday on which I was shortly about to depart.
My suspicions about the purchase were aroused as soon as I opened the Amazon taped and labelled box, I have never seen such a worn Nikon box. It was scratched, rubbed and discoloured. There was a sticker on the top of the box across the fastening stating that if damaged it should be returned. How odd, I thought. Again something never seen on any other Nikon product I have ever purchased. When I opened the box and removed the packaging from around the lens I noticed it was VR lens and not a VR II as advertised on the Amazon website. I was disappointed and inspected the lens very carefully.....fortunately it was sound. I looked in the box and removed the Maual - this was pristine - but there was NO WARRENTY registration certificate.
In my opinion the lens is a 'grey' import and the supplier knows this and has removed the WARRENTY documentation as Nikon would not agree to cover any repair, should they be needed, as it was not imported directly into the UK by them. So, I have not been able to register new lens with Nikon. This is a nonsense condition for a global company- but it is as it is and something we camera enthusiasts have to put up with.
As I wanted to use this lens on an imminent holiday on which I was due to depart (two days later) I decided to keep the lens and take the risk re warrenty.
The lens is lovely and works well - as you will find in other reviews here on this site - but this cannot take away my disappointment at opening the box of this much desired purchase.
