Good, but nowhere near the genius of the first Grinderman
on 23 September 2010
The first Grinderman album renewed my then long-lost faith in rock. It did all that rock was supposed to do, but so rarely does now - these days rock is far too ready to merely unambitiously re-work the various styles of the last 60 years. Grinderman 1 was wild, sexy, experimental, exciting, nasty, at times poignant, at times funny, at times deliciously disgusting, always amazingly-crazy-sounding, primal, dirty, noisy, powerful-as-hell, all with great songs and great lyrics. To resort to cliché - it rocked like a mother..!
Grinderman 2 isn't bad, it just isn't as good as the first - The songs aren't quite as strong, the riffs are less focussed, the vocals sound more like an impromptu jam than like thoughtfully composed songs. In fact the vocals seems a lot lower in the mix, which rather spoils things for me. There are still moments of primal power and amazing noises, but inevitably it pales in comparison to the extraordinary genius of Grinderman 1.
