I was disappointed by this film
on 23 November 2017
I was disappointed by this film , I found it slow and plodding in parts and some of the acting was wooden. It was a long film but it did nt satisfactorily explore the complexities of the German occupation of The Netherlands, focussing mostly on some friends who became resistance fighters and portraying them in a Boy`s Own way. I think it avoided delving into the reasons behind some difficult issues such as the Queen`s flight to England or the motivations of those who collaborated or simply got on with their lives.
It is well made , Rutger Hauer is immensely charismatic as the lead and is well supported by Edward Fox. It does not shy away from depicting torture and it does refer to the persecution and deportation of Jewish people.
Overall it was an ok war drama but it would have been better with a sharper political edge and a less romantic view of the main protagonists.
