The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Extra Width (Shove!) Formed is New York in 1991 from the ashes of Pussy Galore (a car-crash of a band if ever there was one), The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion were seemingly spawned fully formed, a three-piece, bassless blues-punk-soul band.
"Extra Width" from 1993 was their breakthrough record, a particularly raw and ragged collection, which sweats a libido they were desperate to share. Featuring favourites such as "Afro", "Backslider" and "Train 2", it's a great place for Jon Spencer virgins to experience their first Explosion (sorry). Released as part of a mega-reissue programme that includes everything up to the band's 1998 "ACME" album, and a particularly unwholesome hits (what hits?) collection, "Extra Width" comes remastered with a second disc of extras ("Mo Width"). 46 tracks, all in, and more than enough to restore anyone's faith in the power of rock `n' roll. 9/10.
