Saving the Best For Last
on 10 September 2010
After a couple of lacklustre series, Eric & Ernie return for what is probably their most consistent and riveting series ever.
The 1973 and 1974 series had suffered from a lack of variety and excrutiatingly long sketches. Thankfully, this series sees the return of the "quickie" sketches, two musical guests per episode and a much more focused, better paced finale.
This is the series that includes the Breakfast/Stripper sketch, which has about a minute of extra material at the start. You can see why they edit it out on compilations, but seeing M&W sketches in context is always rewarding, particularly all the different closing songs.
It's a pity they were never this consistent again, but as the close of their BBC work (their last two Christmas specials are already out on DVD), this is certainly a high point to end on.
