This is an excellent Sibelius CD for those both familiar and unfamiliar with undoubtedly the finest Finnish classical composer ever. The music includes some of his finer works as well as a few played rather less often on the classical radio airwaves. His first symphony is arguably as fine as any initial symphonic composition across the classical genre; Finlandia as rousing and yet as melodic and contrasting as you'll find too. The Swans is beautiful with also a mysterious air, incorporating some of the finest Cor Anglais passages you'll ever find musically. To those not familiar with Sibelius he could be described as a slightly more modern version of Tchaikowshy. Add to the above the excellent musicality from a superb orchestra and conductor, and you've got a winner, especially with the price, at the lower end of the CD classical spectrum!
