'We started out to make a Bulgarian jazz/fusion album', says Andy Irvine - why? - 'but we made this instead...no doubt somebody will think of a pigeonhole to put it in'.
Twenty two years later, it's still hard to say what that pigeonhole should be: it's really halfway between straight folk - very authentic considering it's Balkan music played mostly by Irishmen - and lounge jazz. And it's that aspect, with tinny keyboards, congas and boingy bass, that comes close to spoiling it. It was the early 90s, after all - which in Folk terms is the same as being the 80s. If you don't believe me, witness Irvine and Spillane's 'Scouser' perms in the booklet photo.
An interesting curiosity, but better stick to Muszikas and Planxty respectively.
