No Mean City

No Mean City (named after the 1935 novel) was a high point for Nazareth. Together with Razamanaz and Hair of the Dog, this is certainly one of their classics. Two years before Iron Maiden would enter the rock domain, Nazareth were producing artwork that would inspire countless other heavy metal bands. Though they're not heavy metal themselves, this album is probably as heavy as Nazareth got. Just listen to songs like 'claim to fame'. Its a crushing, pounding rocker that has Dan McCafferty's gravelly vocals belting out the lyrics. But this album could be light too with 'star' and 'whatever you want babe', the kind of catchy ballads you'd be humming all day. However the addition of ex-Alex Harvey guitarist Clem Cleminson gives songs like 'simple solution' and 'just to get into it' that wacky off-key edge. Its his presence here that really elevates this album.

If you like the heavier Nazareth of Hair of the Dog then this is your next stop. Perhaps not quite as good as that one, but its got bags of quality and showed a band unafraid to go a little experimental.
