SQL Server is a great product now. Since the updating in 2005 (2000 is very clunky) it has got even better with 2008, and now even more better with 2008R2!
The pricing and licensing options are pretty good too. I got the developer edition, which is the full enterprise version but I can only use it for dev and test work not production - which considering the price is pretty good. (I know some Oracle enthusiasts will say they get theirs free, but hey how many of you are there, not many :-)
The supplier (via Amazon marketplace) was outstanding. There were some glitches in the supply chain from MSFT, but SoftwareLicenceShop kept me informed by regular emails (including even a reply email id) regarding the situation.
SQL Server 2008 R2 is a great product from Microsoft - may be _the_ best product from Microsoft that is setting the standard in industry-grade database server. SQL Server 2008 makes major improvements to its predecessor - the SQL Server 2005.
The Development Edition is the same as a standard commercial edition (priced in several thousands) but intended for design, development and testing - just short of production deployment - but at a tiny cost of around £50 or less. You can even get it a bit cheaper at MicrosoftStore and still cheaper if you locate their discount coupon.
SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition is one of my favourite software. Can't recommend enough!
