Follow that dream records, the collectors division of RCA have done it yet again with another superb re-packaging in their ongoing series of original LP re-issues. Turning their attention to the 1962 "Girls Girls Girls" movie soundtrack. Maybe the first film to notably show a formula and slight downturn in quality that was to become a familiar and unfortunate pattern. Having said that it's not a bad film by any accounts, and it did contain some very strong songs indeed, most notably "Return to Sender" and the UK Billy Fury hit song "Because of love". On its original release in 1962 it fared badly when compared to the highly successful "Blue Hawaii", indeed this film was also filmed in Hawaii, one of only three elvis films that were, the other being "Paradise Hawaiian Style" three years later.

This CD set gives you the original LP, some bonus songs, then a batch of first takes and alternate takes. Beautiful packaging and detailed booklet help show the production process and how the songs came to be, unfortunately the afforementioned highlights from the soundtrack are not on the alternate takes list, but we do get most other tracks in their infancy and going through various stages of development.

Listening to take after take of "Mama" can get a bit monotonous especially as you feel as though your watching a DOLMIO advert, but its nice to have the inclusion of the rare version only previously available on the "Lets be friends" Camden LP.

Its only a single CD release but it is well worth the money. Overall another one for the collection, I do like these gatefold re-issues they are great to own.

Please FTD keep up the Re-issues and the great packaging

Cheers
Paul

Girls! Girls! Girls! came at the end of Elvis' golden period, and contains only one gem, "Return To Sender". It's worth saying though that is one of Elvis' strongest early 60s hits, powerful, smooth and witty it's a true classic.
So that aside we have 12 more originals which vary in quality from the pretty "Because Of Love" and fun title track, the bizarre "Earth Boy" to dull stuff such as "I Don't Want To".
Of this enhanced collection, you have the usual wonderful FTD packaging (nice pictures, background etc) and some difficult to get hold of tracks, like the pleasant little dance track "Plantation Rock" and a revision of "Girls Girls Girls" (which is real fun).
The outtakes are not as varied as we'd come to expect. Dominated by tired versions of the very dull "Mama" (do they never stop!) it is clear there was a distinct lack of bonus material available, and with the exception of the version 're-mixed' for 70s consumption one is much the same as another.

The cover is the same as the LP which I am glad about + good info ref musicians which you didn't get with the LP.
The only down side is the pictures used, same pic used where the CD sits is on the back of the CD, a different pic ( possibly one where Elvis sing's on stage in the black suit ) would have been better.
Overall the sound is excellent.
