This book is excellent for those considering new roles in HE leadership. However, it's also a useful resource for anyone in HE who wants to better understand the organisational structure in which they must operate. It is a book that should be required reading for anyone interested in building capacity within the HE sector.

This would be a good read for anyone working in, or with, unversities worldwide, but for any academic manager (say, Head of Department) in the UK it's absolutely required reading. The chapters explain the changes in HE as they have an impact at lecture theatre level, and provide excellent hints on how not to manage time, meetings and people, from someone who has clearly been there. This clarified and gave structure to a lot of diffuse impressions.

5 stars. This is what every manager in higher education should read. It clearly shows what 'should' happen, if it not what actually does.

The optimism was occasionally a bit tiresome but the advice itself is helpful. I would recommend this to those in academic management

Bought this book because I am planning to move from one type of role in HE to a management position. I found this volume clear, concise, straightforward and incredibly useful.
