When 'Bittersweet' made its unofficial YouTube debut (and also its UK radio debut) it was in the guise of its full Freemasons club version. The huge synth line dominated the track and it felt dangerously tense and thrilling. It was like early 80s synth pop being lovingly recreated as anthemic, melodic house music.
Strangely, the CD single version does not contain that mix of the track. The standard radio mix has a differently feel entirely - with the melody taking centre stage and the busy production doing more to punctuate the verses. That overwhelming synth line is buried within the mix, merely hinted at after each chorus. Sophie's vocals are as deliciously haughty and unreadable as ever; she is able to inject the lyrics with a sense of unease, the feeling that there is a lot more going on just beneath the surface. This mix is initially far less exciting but, given time, grows in stature and has the greater emotional pull.
Second track 'Sophia Loren' is currently unavailable elsewhere and some may feel that this gives value to the CD single. Musically, it's more in keeping with Sophie's 'indie pop' sensibilities and its stuttery, jerky stucture leaves me a little cold.
The download bundle includes the Freemasons club version and also a (rather poor) Jodie Harsh mix.
Give this song a listen. After 2007's Trip The Light Fantastic, Sophie is finally back with a new album this summer and here's the first single. Bittersweet is a whooshing, emotive, powerful, and overall AMAZING song. The chorus is just so dramatic and the production is fresh. Please support Sophie and her unique brand of charming pop.
Being the age that I am, I was a bit young to get down to all the Sophie Ellis Bextor songs of a few years ago. I remember seeing the murder on the dance floor on totp all that time ago, but never really noticed her too much since then. Bittersweet is a great track with dark verses, chilled chorus and updated 80's style backing and paired with the irresistable vocals of Ms Ellis Bextor. But what I love most is that its opened up to me all the other songs she's done. She is truely a class act!
I just can't believe Sophie's making 10 years in the music industry as a solo artist. That's really amazing, and not so many people can do it, in this days os illegal downloads and the lack of support from radios and music labels. However, Sophie's here, with another smash under her belt. & this is "Bittersweet", an 80's feel-synthpop song, which I think it's her best work to date, as she's always improving herself. The CD also includes the song "Sophia Loren", that song that was played at the Rimmel London' ad, do you remember?? That ad was really amazing, and so chic! I think Sophie is one of the few artists, popstars, that make real music, high quality music in this days of low quality, auto-tune & easy & annoying lyrics. She's a real popstar. I hope she continues another 10 years & so in this business, cos' she's absolutely fantastic. She's the BEST-OR!!
this is the 2nd CD single i ever buy, i payed a lot more than it costs just for the delivery, but well, everything to support the awesome lady Ms. Bextor!!! both songs in this are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! great job as always Sophie!!!, plus the single cover ROCKS!!
