I love the mountains and thought this book would engage with me, but I actually found this to be a bit waffley and wanted the author to get to the point. I didn't get to the end and gave up on it!

Moody and atmospheric. A thought-provoking book. Involves quite a lot of familiar material to mountain literary enthusiasts. Historical references are interesting.

This is a fascinating and interesting insight into mountain climbing and why they do it, I do some mountain climbing myself but not at this level. It's well written and extremely readable. I enjoyed all aspects of it, the history, his own experiences as well as that of others and as the title suggests the state of the mind. Perhaps the people who did not enjoy it are not very interested in the subject matter.

The title is straightforward: this book is real brilliant at times and gets almost boring now and then. But don't get me wrong: the brilliant and (very) erudite by Macfarlane is well worth reading. An epic account of the Everest reconnaissances and expeditions, the history of the beginning of mountaineering...
The only downside; the propensity of the author to drift from the subject at times and an overload of litterary quotes.

A fascinating read about the Western fascination with mountains and mountain-climbing over the last 400 years. Some of the stories are thoroughly eye-watering and vertigo-inducing so I shall remain an armchair enthusiast!

This is an eloquently written book that describes the beauty, spirituality and challenges of climbing in the mountains over the centuries. Macfarlane has written a moving account that will, I hope, be read for years to come.
