The copy I received was not as described
on 17 August 2015
There are 2 "Audience with Ken Dodd" productions, the first in 1994 and the second in 2002. The 2002 production (not surprisingly) was called "Another Audience with Ken Dodd". I had made a home recording of the "Audience with Ken Dodd"1994 version when it was broadcast on ITV, so I am familiar with it. Never having seen the 2002 version, I bought a copy on DVD from Amazon in March this year.
I Thought a DVD would be far better than my home recording of the 1994 production, so I ordered this one which Amazon describes as "An Audience with Ken Dodd 1994" and also states:- "This item: An Audience with Ken Dodd [DVD] ~ Lorna Dickinson DVD". As the illustration shows a totally different picture on the front, from the one i had recently bought, it seemed that it must be the version as described.
When it turned up, on the back of the DVD, there were pictures of some scenes which I instantly recognised as being from the 2002 version, and listing Ricky Tomlinson as a member of the "star studded audience". Either, the description is incorrect, or the DVD label is incorrect. I explained the issue to Amazon, my complaint was accepted, and I posted the item straight back without breaking the seal,
If your copy of the DVD features Ricky Tomlinson in the audience, you have the 2002 version - producer Paul Lewis. On the other hand, if the audience includes Dame Hilda Brackett and Paul Daniels, you really do have the proper 1994 version - producer Lorna Dickinson.
The DVD of the correct 1994 edition, features Ken wearing the yellow jacket that he got by "sending off Bird's Custard labels", and holding red, white and blue tickling sticks - all on a yellow background. Both versions are a good laugh if you are feeling a bit down, but in my opinion the earlier one is the better of the two. The proper 1994 version seems to be far more expensive, but I found a pre-owned one in perfect condition on e**y.
