I havent got the technical ability to tell you why these are the best, so its just my instinct. I first heard these on some rather scratchy Lps from a car boot, within a few seconds it seemed to me that here was perfection in composition and playing. I have since bought them on cd ( where no 3 was missing) and have never heard a better recording since, the sound is so natural its perfect, you find yourself totally relaxed to wallow in the majesty with no need for furrowed brows of concentration. There is both power, poise and intricacy in these four suites, many people will recognise the famous air. So, turn down the lights, settle in your most comfortable chair and open a bottle of red wine ( or two ) and get some quality time before the grim reaper gets you !!
I first had this set on LP but when I upgraded to CDs bought a version on period instruments. After 20 odd years it finally dawned on me that I preferred the Menuhin version so I purchased it. The sound is surprisingly good. An excellent job of remastering
