I have squirrels that come into to my back garden to be fed - having spotted one squirrel passing by one day, and being an experienced squirrel feeder in local parks, lured him in with ease. Eventually, his neighbours spotted him carrying nuts away and followed him back, as they do. I now have at least 6 of them coming in at various times of day, and when I am out of nuts in their shells, I put down monkey nuts. Unfortunately, the local wood pigeons have spotted this, and will hoover them up if I am not watching.
I therefore ordered one of these feeders, having read the various reviews and watched Bob’s video, to keep the pigeons away.
The feeder arrived in a cardboard box without any padding or other packaging, but was undamaged. It was fully assembled, with the lid feeling a bit wobbly, but it lies flat when closed. The wood is of a good finish, but looks like it needs varnishing to make it water-resistant.
The squirrels were a bit nervous when I put the feeder out - it sits on a small retaining wall opposite my kitchen window, where the squirrels are used to go to collect their food. I laid a trail of nuts to the feeder, and propped the lid open with a nut to give them a clue where to follow the trail. One squirrel wouldn’t even take a nut off the jutting shelf, but within a day, some squirrels were lifting the lid and helping themselves. I use a small wooden skewer to keep the lid open a bit to give the less adventurous squirrels a hint, but expect the squirrels to be fully trained in a couple of days.
