Big sigh... So, I think Joely Richardson is great...but not in this. Dougray Scott is someone I can take or leave but in this he's just dull. And Eddie Izzard? Who on farther thought he was a good idea for the role of Torrance? He's very obviously been cast because when the series was made he was a name of the moment. A mistake.

What about the story? Well, for a book that is as amazing as The Triffids is, I can't quite understand how often those who want to turn the book into video get it wrong. The original movie with Howard Keele was laughable..but with good will you could imagine what a good movie that could have been. The original BBC series was relentlessly downbeat but did actually capture the spirt of the book. But this remake? All that money, and quite a bit of talent, and what we got was instantly forgettable, as well as being so far from the book in many places that it seemed to me that whoever wrote the screenplay had only a passing memory of what was in the book.

This is a story that worked with thought and imagination, by a major directorial talent, could be a wow movie or a great mini-series. I hope someone at Netflix or Amazon or HBO says "I've got a great idea...".

Yes it's a modern re-invention of the original and that is okay, as it a fresh approach to a well loved Sci-fi story. The plants were so well done that their realism enhanced the production.
However, I did wonder why there weren't more sighted people around the world with many people working shifts etc. as well as changes in the time zones around the world; since instead of the comets falling for several hours, they showed one blinding flash of light.
The original story's way of fighting the carnivorous plants, also made more sense than the one suggeted in this version.

I saw this on the television watching it with some trepidation as I believe that modern remakes usually do not live up to the originals. If you look at the film as a stand alone without any comparison to the book or original BBC series then it has an easily followed story line with a differnt twist. It is set some time after the meteor shower wher the triffids have been developed to produce a greener fuel. These are allowed to escape by a disgruntled worker and the film follows the ensuing mayhem and attempts to regain control. My advise is if you can read the book, buy an original version, so much better. Treat this as a stand alone and do not compare it with any of the preceeding recomended actions. If you do this then as I amdoing it is worthy of a second viewing and as such I have purchased a copy.

excellent update of an old classic well worth a watch when there is nothing on television on a rainy weekend.

Massively disappointing. Avoid like the triffids. While it has its moments it seems so needlessly overblown with scenes that will provoke laughter ( particularly the plane crash with eddie izzard). This could have been so much better. If you want to see a better version get the original bbc version.

I know there are detractors, but I like this series. Yes it doesn't follow the book too well, but overall it's a good sci-fi thriller. Whatever your views are, it's still worth reading the actual book - it's brilliant
