A gripping story by someone with military knowledge but also with an excellent story-telling talent. Lots of fun and very enjoyable.

Hello and welcome to another exciting Simon Scarrow review, this time the second legion has got themeselves into a hostage situation , its up to the old duo of Cato and Macro to help the legion save their leaders wife and child.

Firstly , I would suggest reading the previous books in order to learn about the characters relationships and previous battles which are reffered to. This book keeps to the same writing style as the previous creations and brings something slightly to different to the mainly battle orientated line before. The wife and children of general plautius and have been taken by the british druids and the legion has been given a week to either give back their brothers (taken on a exciting raid on a british village) or the hostages will be killed in a wicker man.

Simon Scarrow has shown he can write a wider range of storys as this has turned into a exciting roman thriller , with all the battles , politics and roman undercurrents still showing in the storyline. The writing is rarely boring and you find yourself picking up speed as the legion tries to save the generals family. The characters grow in depth and the relationships show change as new nemisis's and allies are made . The skirmishes are still full of detail and the link you feel with the soldiers is very strong.

It is useful to read the two previous books first, as this book then becomes a gripping read, in effect as a trilogy
