I normally love Tom Holt, which is what made this book so disappointing. Usually there are plenty of laughs and an intriguing story and you can forgive the use of everyman protagonist because there will be at least one amusing character. Sadly, this book has none of this. The premise is tiresome, the scenes unrelateable, not one of the characters has a hint of personality and the 'humour' is so weak it's depressing. There is no real plot, more of nebulous situation and a lot of futile running around. Some of the more verbose and unnecessary explanations became so dreary I nearly quit reading a few times.
Tom Holt has produced some fine books, notably the J W Wells series, but this is not one of the greats.
