This series was first screened by Grampian Television some years ago and was surprisingly given an early evening weekday slot. Unusual for a schedule dominated by soaps. Before Scotland looks at Scotlands early history, long before the more well known periods of scottish history such as the wars of independance and the jacobite uprisings. The presenter Alistair Moffat talks with passion about his subject, taking us from the Stone Age right through to the formation of early Scotland in 843 AD.
The series consists of 6 half hour episodes. I found the later episodes to be of the most interest as we learn about the various peoples who created Scotland, the native Pictish peoples, the Britons of Strathclyde and the "Scotti" from the north of Ireland.
The series was clearly done on a budget and the reconstructions do look a bit amateurish. Also in the early episodes Mr Moffat seems to explain everything mysterious away as being down to "ritual activity". Overall though this is a very worthwhile series. Worth watching for anyone interested in early scottish history.

The best doc on Scot pre-history we have seen. Especially liked the gentleman from Ness on Lewis. Alistair presents a lot of conjecture and "could have beens" but it is all reasonable.

Great program! Purchased this DVD for my dad for Christmas. Didn't notice that the formatting was for UK only. He was able to watch it on his computer ok though. I would suggest perhaps indicating the formatting in the description of the product so people aren't ordering something that won't play in a North American DVD player.

I really am enjoying watching this Grampian TV series. I like the presenter and the views of Scotland's archeological sites are breathtaking. The dramatised bits are a bit naff but some viewers might enjoy actually seeing people portray prehistoric humans. However, the views of the sites and the thoughtful narration make it excellent.
