This is non fiction and I have to say the author has gone to great lengths to gather the resources and material. There are photos, sketches, architectural plans and designs, blueprints and original letters of Alcatraz, the inmates and the officers that worked there. It is def. a must read for history buffs. It is almost eery reading the private letters of some of the most infamous criminals that have been detained on that island. Even though the kindle edition shows the pictures in black and white they are clear, readable and of great quality.

Interesting, and not a 'heavy' read, slightly weak at some parts, but worth a read if intersted in anything realated to Alcatraz.

Having visited Alcatraz twice (as a tourist!) I found the first part of this book quite interesting about Al Capone, The Birdman etc and the escape attempts and prison battle descriptions. However the second half of the book went on and on with similar letters which were long winded and boring, so much so that I got fed up and stopped reading it which is unusual for me.

I found the book interesting, especially as I have visited Alcatraz on a number of occasions and have some knowledge of the American prison system. Like other commentators, I did not always find it easy to navigate the photographs of the letters presented, some of which were not reproduced in text format. Some also appeared out of sequence. However, the history of the island prison and the individual sketches of its "guests" were quite revealing.

Having attempted to visit Alcatraz whilst in San Franscisco and not managing it, this was a bold out of the blue to see on Amazon. It brought the journey i had taken all back to me seeing island so close yet so far away and to think of the criminal minds that were housed in their. their letters give a different view of their existence on the island than might have otherwise been held. Very good.

Having been to Alcatraz I looked forward to seeing the individual stories that would be different from the official blurb. While it offered some interesting insights, I found it to be repetitive. The sketches and drawings were useful but didn't add too much to my experience. Worth a quick read, but not much more.

Most of the letters, even the ones from infamous, criminals were everyday gripes that were fascinating in their mundanity. Anyone with an interest in prison movies etc would enjoy this book.

Visited Alcatraz over 10 years ago. This book brings back memories of a very atmospheric place. Good book. I think it's conversion to ebook has jumbled it up a bit but still very readable.
