Not Convinced....consider carefully
on 16 March 2010
This is a good camera and it takes great photographs, but I have sold it and bought an Canon IXUS SD880 to replace it, and as far as I can tell, the 10mp IXUS has identical image quality, was less than half the price and is about 1/3 of the size and weight of this brick, which IMO is the worst of both worlds, in other words, it is too big and heavy to be really convenient, but offers few of the advantages of a DSLR, it is entirely likely that the internals of an IXUS are exactly the same as this camera, and what you are paying all this money for is an overblown body and a load of buttons that you dont need, but if thats what you want....then fine
The articulating screen is nice (but how often will you use it ?), the optical viewfinder is OK, but now I have the little IXUS, I realise that I really dont need all that on a compact, and the screen quality on the new compacts is so good now even in bright light that you really can manage without.
OK, how about all that advanced control ?.....well, adjusting the aperture on a small sensor camera like this is a very ineffective way to control depth of field, nothing like as good as on a bigger sensor DSLR....to me one of the great charecteristics of a compact is the fact that almost everything is always in focus....you can adjust the aperture till the cows come home on a small sensor camera like this and the effect on DOF is minimal....so why bother ?
Build is good if you like that sort or thing, but seriously, the little IXUS has the same 28mm equiv wide end, is also beautifully finished, and has just enough control...ie controls that you will actually use, the G11 has custom presets but I never used them
So to sum up, the G11 is great, its lovely to use and takes good photographs, but, its not a DSLR and never can be, a smaller lighter cheaper Canon SD880 with a similar focal range can do just as good a job as this camera and it fits in the smallest of pockets.....so my opinion is that a compact should be compact, a camera of this size has none of the convenience of a compact, and few of the advantages of a larger camera, there is a market for this kind of thing, and Canon know that....but thay meke little sense really IMO
