I chose this particular production because I admire Wells and was advised it was one of the best. I was not disappointed. The photography, costumes, the brooding darkness of it all is perfectly captured. Wells is a magnificent Othello and Iago was not overplayed; a still malignant poison of a man. It's also a short production, less than 90 minutes so it's an ideal concentration span: such intensity couldn't be extended for much longer. I loved it, loved it, loved it. But hey, if you're new to Shakespeare don't start with this tragic piece of work. This ain't for the fainthearted.

I greatly enjoyed this work as an outstanding piece of cinematography. The use of location shots and the imaginative camera work throughout is stunning. Welles lends tremendous gravitas to the role of Othello. However beware Shakespeare's play has been heavily edited to fit into this 90+ minute film and the sound quality as one would expect from a film from 1952 is at times rather poor. Overall this film is well worth watching and deserves a place amongst any collection of Shakespeare films.

There are, at time of writing, two versions for sale on Amazon; I bought the cheaper, which has Korean and English text on the box.
Intermittently quite grainy, which can distract from the remarkable cinematography. The English subtitles are occasionally different from the spoken word. Orson Welles is too pale, too old and too porky for the part - but he is still magnificent to watch.
If you do not know the play, it is in part gruesome, in a way that modern shoot-and-slash special effects nonsense is not.
If studying the play this is a good introduction, but a less edited version is desirable.

One of the biggest and most important restorations in cinema history. The beginning and the end of the film close the circle from the same point. Masterfull use of filters and locations. One of my top three firms. Orson Welles was lucid - a film that sits well next the his equally extraordinary 'Chimes after Midnight'.

The film is a first class version of Othello and the quality of the DVD is excellent, so if you're just looking for othello and nothing more then you'll be very happy and will enjoy the quality of the film. However if you're expecting to see from the sales description on the website, the additional short story Return to Glennescual (the title of which doesn't appear in the product description, but the actors names do) then you'll be disappointed. This DVD version doesn't have the short story, but it does advertise the actors who appear in it; Michale Laurence, Shelah Richards, Helena Hughes and John Dunne.
