I got into the likes of Steve Earle a few years back and while familiar with a few Van Zandt songs by other artists I'd only heard him deliver a few, not all of which were that great.Despite Earle's recent tribute I was bit reticent when approaching the man himself. Very nearly started with a compilation but very glad I went with this. Its quite sparsley produced by the accompaying Chips Moman, but it really works-Spooner Oldham etc. are deft in their contribution and all the songs are worth their salt-all but one self penned-and the odd one out is a very listenable "Who do you love"-most are quite downbeat, I'd have liked to hear him pick it up a bit, he clearly could when in the mood. A very solid album then-one for Earle and Lyle Lovett fans to investigate.
