I'm not really a fan of blues-rock but I think this is an accomplished record that combines tracks like the high-energy opener "Dirty blonde" with more subtle songs like the closing ballad "C'mon baby". Mike has a really good voice and can whip up the excitement level with some stinging electric blues guitar and the David Z (Prince, Buddy Guy, Johnny Lang) production sounds great. There is also good use of guests to bring a bit of variety - just as I was getting a bit tired of Mike's full-on guitar sound the duet with Anders Osborne on Anders' lovely acoustic song "One Step At A Time" is a really nice change of pace. Other guests are Susan Cowsill singing on the fun "Shoes blues", Cyril Neville playing organ on the title track, Johnny Sansome's accordion on "The dead of night" and Lynwood Slim playing nice chromatic harp on the slow blues "All Last Night". I wasn't too keen on Mike's version of the old Sonny Boy Williamson song "Eyesight to the blind" but overall this is a very varied and enjoyable modern blues record.
