If, like me, you know nothing of the American Civil War apart from the Ken Burns documentary, and the Ashokan Farewell, from the same series, you will still love this. In my opinion, the Ashokan Farewell may be one of the most beautiful pieces of music of the 20th century, and it's played here by its creators, along with, like it says on the label, other Civil War classics. It's fabulous.
Beautifully crafted, thoughtful arrangements coupled with sensitive performances make this a winner for anyone interested in the period, or who has been moved by "Ashokan Farewell" featured in Ken Burns renowned documentary "The Civil War".Extremely good.
I have only recently been introduced to the Ashokan Farewell track and was keen to try this CD and have to say I was not disappointed. A really good selection of music from the American Civil War era ballads, dance music and medleys and love songs. The recording is taken from a Live performance at the Gettysburg College. Each song has a short up to 30 second introduction on its own track which was very interesting then the track itself was simply the music which I felt a good way of handling a live performance – it enhanced the experience done that way. Jay Ungars plays fiddle, viola, harmonica and banjo and Molly Mason plays guitar, banjo and piano. Both of them have great vocals and you just feel transported into the life and times of the 1860’s. Very enjoyable.
A Christmas present for my husband who is an avid civil war fan,he watches all the documentaries, reads many books and tries to find the music that is played.Amazon sent an e mail with civil war dvds and when looking at these found this cd which was perfect. He hasn't listened to this yet but I'm certain it will be great and very much appreciated
