These 4 films were never going to be as good as the original series . That said - the main characters are just as engaging , and the performances have the high standard you would expect from these two fine actors . The plots are so-so , but that never was the point of Cagney and Lacey . Apparently the sub-title of ' The Menopause Years ' has annoyed some women , and worried others about being non-PC . Well , ' ain't that just Cagney and Lacey ' - still upsetting some people . The first film does actually see Cagney with menopausal symtoms , and it is portrayed with the brio and disrepect you would expect from this character . Are they older ? Yes , of course they are . Could they have looked younger ? Yes , of course they could - if the usual make-up and box of tricks had been employed - but quite rightly that was not the intention . Much of the four films deal with ageing . A very brave move in todays world . But C & L was never afraid of anything . The biggest thing missing is the cut and thrust and wise-cracking of the squad room . Both C & L are now working for the DA's office , and this is rather restrictive , bringing a somewhat hushed tone to much of the proceedings . The scenes in the ladies room are also a big, big loss . Some of the best acting , and best scenes of the original series were done ' in the John ' . But hey , if you are a fan - you will love seeing them again . If you are not - then please start with the absolutely fabulous original series . The unique chemistry between Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly is still there . If you want acting , if you want a camera shot to last longer than two seconds , if you want the characters to react and show emotion , if you don't want endless boring pseudo-science about horrific murders , if you want the script not to be a list of tersely spit out wooden sentences a la CSI - ie if you want real drama , and real women - buy it . Conference Christine !
I'm in the UK and was really looking forward to these as I'm a big C&L fan. I took care to check compatibility by reading the entire blurb onsite but despite being described as PAL, and "All Regions" - when received, none of the DVDs would play on my DVD player. I did manage to get video output on my PC-DVD but no sound - so, all in all, a pretty useless purchase. BUYER BEWARE!
