This was a stunning, 6 hour epic retelling the calling to arms and martyrdom of Saint Joan of Arc. I have seen lots of versions of the Maid's tale but this was probably the most realistic and least "Hollywood." The lead actress Sandrine Bonnaire was superb as Joan; natural and tragic at the end. I would advise watching it in hour sections as over the six hours you really "travel" with Joan. You quickly forget the subtitles as well! I watched this film before and after a trip to Rouen, Normandy where Saint Joan was martyred and it helped bring to life this remarkable woman. If you have any interest in history, Joan of Arc or a devotion to this Saint then I would thoroughly recommend this production.
The last week of Joan of Arc is filmed in an extraordinary vividness which makes us living all the feelings she knows. Sandrine Bonnaire remains one of the best Maid of the cinema. She makes more and best than simply play-acting : she's actually living the last days of the saint with a great strength and deep emotions. And we are so shaken to see this young women suffering for God... AMAZING !!!
An outstanding tour de force of acting - the battle scenes are tasteful and not laboured - a relief for anyone who is watching from a religious aspect. A glorious film. Sandrine Bonnaire is incredible - so believable that it is impossible to watch the very end! An excellent resource for all those who have a devotion to this saint or even R.E. teachers in Catholic schools.
