Beware: Flawed lead / plug design
on 15 March 2011
When I first used this product I was staggered at the ease with which the product directed straight in to the heart of London from Winchester. To arrive at my destination in Battersea seemed extremely impressive even if it is difficult to set up and I did experience teething problems trying to find other destinations. I've not used in a great deal in complicated situations and found that I have been directed around in a circle trying to pick up a road to Aldershot outside Guildford. Thinking that the Sat-Nav knew a better route, I was directed across country only to end up where I started. This led to be be very suspicious of the product although just how much this is the fault of the gadget and not the satellite I am unable to say.
My biggest gripe was that the pin at the end of the plug was too flimsy for the strength of the rather unflexible lead. When it was plugged in and charging, the lead was in the way of the gear stick in my Audi A3 and eventually pulled the metal pin out of it'splastic housing. By the time I had used this for the forth occasion, the plug snapped off completely despite being very, very careful with it. I was staggered at how poor this design was. Clearly, the lead is not up to the job but the successors to Sat-Nav did replace this at no extra cost - albeit they sent me the wrong model lead to begin with. The lead, however, remains of the same, inflexible design.
All in all, I thought that this product was too good to be true the first time that I used it and I wouldn't strongly recommend it now due to the problems with the lead. As someone who generally feels intimidated by gadgets, there were times when I felt like throwing this outside the car window. I don't think that it is the panacea to find directions to the most out of the way addresses but perhaps my expectations were too high. The problems with the lead (which appears to have been subsequently re-designed in the replacement I now have) would not make me recommend this product. As yet, the replacement has only been used once and I am unable to ascertain whether it is more robust.
