TOP 100 REVIEWERon 29 November 2014
The great trumpeter/bandleader Miles Davis(1926-1991) recorded the two takes of 'Bags' Groove' at a legendary session in Hackensack, New Jersey on Christmas Eve, 1954 with Thelonious Monk(piano); Milt Jackson(vibes); Percy Heath(bass) & Kenny Clarke(drums).
There was said to be some tension between Miles & Monk on their rare recording encounter but the music is magnificent.
Most of the album features 5 tracks from a fine quintet session recorded in Hackensack on June 29, 1954 with Miles(trumpet); Sonny Rollins(tenor sax); Horace Silver(piano) & Kenny Clarke(drums).
This excellent CD should be heard together with Miles Davis & The Modern Jazz Giants(OJC 347) which contains the remainder of the famous Xmas Eve, 1954 session.

You need go no further than the record sleeve to see the stellar line up of stars featured on this album, which is in fact made up of two disparate sessions with two very different line-ups. featuring Two takes each of the title track and the sublime But Not For Me is no issue as the interpretations are different, with the rest of the album featuring Airegin, Oleo and Doxy. A worthwhile purchase for anyone liking Miles' 1950's groove.

Great jazz combo with Bag's Grooves {Milt Jackson} and Doxy {Sonny Rollins} especially outstanding.Chance to hear these jazz masters in their earlier pomps.

Another one from the Prestige days with some great musicians backing Miles. If you haven't got it in your collection just get it; you won't be disappointed if you like his older stuff.
