Vai is a very good trick guitarist with dazzling runs and lots of showmanship. But this BR sucks as entertainment. It left me cold. He's done better than this. A few nice tunes would have been nice. Maybe he should take a leaf from Jeff Beck's book.
Theres not much I can add about Steve Vai (Genius) that has not be said before, his playing is just amazing and just leaves you breathless, I feel he has picked up where the late GREAT JIMI HENDRIX left off, and not to forget the late GREAT FRANK ZAPPZ who played for him for I think about 3years FRANK did`unt hire just anybody, I also recommmend as you love guitar music checkout ZAPPA-plays-ZAPPA where Steve and terry Bozzio are Special Guest but don`t get the two disc UK vertion get the DELUX 5Disc as you get three cds of the concert+ the DVDs form the U.S. you can buy it here thorugh amazon. This Concert is FABULOUS pricless go buy it Now if you have Live at the ASTORIA London then you`ll just love this so order it now you won`t be dissappointed
'Live At The Astoria' or 'Visual Sound Theories' or any 'G3', Steve Vai is out of doubt the greatest entertaining guitar player. I've seen him live twice. One in Real Illusions - Reflection tour and another in G3 with Satch and Robert Fripp. Every time he is in town, I'm gonna rock there. I enjoy his gigs and music that well. I own all of his DVDs and CDs.
When I found Vai was releasing another DVD, without thinking anything I pre-ordered 'Where The Wild Things Are' from Amazon at really good price. I have to admit that Amazon is the best place for pre-orders. Everyday I would visit his official YouTube page to view the 7 minutes clips and the 2 months waiting was getting longer as closer as it got.
I can never argue on 'Who is the best guitar player?'. Every one is the best and unique. But on 'Who is the best guitar entertainer?', I will assert it's Steve Vai. Because he is. Not only the way the guitar strings he bends and the fun he has with the band. But the clothes he wears, the facial expressions he makes and the hair that flies in the air. He is a poser. He says. He plays with the hands of ten guitarists and a soul of thousands. We know.
With the lighting system above the heads, the carpet under the feet of Steve and that new model, beautiful transparent guitar in his hands, the stage looks fantastically colorful. New line up of beautiful musicians add up different taste. Ann Marie Calhoun and Alex DePue on violins, Zack Wiesinger on lap steel guitar and Bryan Beller on bass. Not to forget the talented Jeremy Colson on drums and the brilliant long term member Dave Weiner on second guitar. The bonus material features interviews from artists. What amazed me was how the same bass player from 'Visual Sound theories' was recruited by Steve. It's just another concert to watch and enjoy.
I was fortunate enough to get the pre-order DVD and CD which Steve signed and I will cherish. Anyway, is it worth the money? Every single penny, in my opinion. Musically so diverse as Steve usually is, and this particular ensemble combine to create some eclectic music which moved me to tears in its emotional and spiritual roller-coaster ride. If you've seen Live at the Astoria, compare this to a more refined Steve with two violinists taking over the more subtle lines in 'All About Eve', and conversely duetting in the harder 'Now We Run'. Steve and the drummer (Jeremy Colson) have a lot of fun as he comes away from his kit complaining he never gets to the front of house, well he gets a portable kit and duets with Steve on an acoustic plus drums version of a snippet within 'Fire Garden', so funny yet very musical too. Altogether the band have a lot of fun, thats what I love about Steve Vai most of all. Steve has posted lots of clips from this DVD on YouTube in HD so have a look, you wont be disappointed.
The argument has been raging for years of who is the BEST guitarist and the subject will always run. I personally do not voice an opinion of who's the best, fastest etc, etc, How can you compare Django to Keef, Eddie to Eric, Hendrix to Les Paul. In my opinion they are all brilliant and bring something to the table. But Steve Vai is up there with the rest of the guitar GODS. If you are a Vai fan you will love his playing and will automatically buy this dvd if you want to get into Vai...Watch with Wonder !, the man is a genius. His playing a times leaves you speechless. The standard of his band playing wise is top draw. I saw this tour and the dvd brings all the memoris back, but in your living room...THANKS AGAIN STEVIE VAI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
