I am disappointed to note that although Sony have added 16Gb of on-board memory and GPS over the previous model (HDR-TG3) but removed Dolby 5.1 audio recording.

When you buy a []£ camera you expect it to be of a high quality especialy for it being from sony, unfortunately this isn't the case with this camera.

Practical people might buy it because of the quality of the video and photographs taken by this camera. Video quality is average, nothing exceptional nothing bad. Imaging quality is very poor especially indoors, in fact, if you take a photograph with this camera and the same photograph by a much cheaper reliable camera (in my case Sony DSC H7) you will notice a very big difference in quality between the two. My newborn daugther looked dull, lifeless and ugly in photos and because I believed in the brand I thought it was just the way she looks, when I took photographs using my older camera the difference was obvious.

One other thing that might tempt you to buy this camera is GPS. The only thing that it does is just to suck down your battery. The other day I was near Marble arch in London in that open area between the arch and Hyde Park and the GPS couldn't locate where we was!, using the GPS indoors was just impossible even though my nokia phone with GPS was able to locate where it was indoors.

Additionaly you might buy the camera for the looks, it is supposed to be small, but it is bigger and no better than a comapct camera, and talking of small, my 10 year old miniDV sony camera was just a bit wider. and for the looks the battery is enclosed inside and that results in you forgetting long shooting sessions (otherwise you have to carry a couple of spares), and the touch screen is just an annoyance and is not comfortable to use and would be suitable for some cheap generic camera but not this. For the looks you also sacrifice the hand strap which can come in handy.

What completes the vicious circle is the software and media downloading from the camera. You cannot access what is stored inside the camera unless you install the software, and in many occasions you cannot access what is inside the memory card through the camera even with the software! I had to buy a card reader to gain access to the photos and videos in the memory card that were in it.

If you ever consider buying one, do not buy it directly from the internet, go to a shop, try it first and judge for yourself. But honestly what I would sugget is just to avoid this purchase altogether. and at this price there are many cameras from many manufacturers that offer a much higher quality and value for money.

If you have the money then consider this camera and put it at the top of your wish list. Its great as a point and shoot machine but there are an awful lot of features that you can enjoy and use......almost too many.

The lens is great....maybe not quite wide enough because you will need the wide angle converter to compliment your setup.

In addition, you will need a very big hard drive. The camera, as you will find produce some very big files. And you may want to burn some DVD's so a DVD drive/burner will be required. More memory would not hurt either.

Overall......wow. A great camera.

ps. It does have a mounting screw for a tripod. I had no end of trouble trying to find any reference to this feature.
