Quite simply, astonishing. The first track I heard off this album was "Holy Night Fever" - an intense, bright, shard of punk-pop with helium vocals and catatonic drumming which packed more new ideas into 1 minute and 18 seconds than has come out of more than 10 years of Britpop and Coldplay / Oasis clones. Having picked up the album on a recent trip to the states I was even more sucked into the crazy world of Deerhoof. Opening track "Sound the Alarm" forms a soundscape intro to "This Magnificent Bird Will Rise" - a four minute stop-start lurching monster of a song with a polemic call to arms: 'The trumpet scatters its awful sound, over the graves of all lands. Death and mankind will be stunned, when Nature rises to give account before the Judge' It's not political, or unpleasant, just delicious lopsided pop, with effortless innovation and musical destruction sharing the stage with childlike wonder at the oddness of the world. Imagine the Sugarcubes playing skatepunk tunes in an explosion at a Japanese nursery school. This four-piece of thirty-somethings from San Francisco (Satomi - vocals and bass, Greg - drums, Chris and John - guitar) have the tunes, the right anarchic attitude and a bloodyminded coherence of purpose strong enough to make the world sit up and take notice. Buy at once!
If your a fan of power experimental pop, this is the deffinition. With its bitting synth droplets in the stereo mix feeding your ears at any moment and the ever flowing genius of rhythm and time change Deerhoof's ability to hold you down and scream happy into your face a thousnad hundred times is shown full pelt on this record!
But seriously, this is the best i have heard deerhoof at the experimental side of town, if your looking for more accessable hoof then buy apple o' or runners four, or you could of course buy the new record. [...]
