MCC MISSES THE MARK
on 27 April 2004
After 2001's brilliant time*sex*love the new MCC album was eagerlyawaited. Sad to say that 'Between Here and Gone' fails to come up to thesame high standards. Its nice enough but a bit one paced with plenty oflyric heavy slow ballads that, without the hooks that characterise ChapinCarpenter's best work, tend to blur into one. The album could do with afew more rockers and those that there are, such as 'Beautiful Racket',don't quite hit the mark. It seems that MCC may have fallen prey to StarTrek Movie syndrome whereby a classic film / album is followed by anaverage one - 1996's 'A place in the world' was a disappointing follow upto the seminal 'Stones in the Road' and this new album is, to my mind, anequally disappointing follow up to 'time*sex*love'.
If you're newto MCC and want to get a real idea of her talent then I'd try one of theaforementioned classics. If you're a fan don't let me put you off, buy'Between here and gone' and make up your own mind. As for me I can't waitfor the next album it's sure to be a classic!
