Just before I start i'd like to say I love Janis Joplin. This CD the sound isn't very good I've looked into it and discovered that the original sound track was in mono because at the concert they didn't have the equipment if you watch the film Woodstock the sound quality is better because it was recorded in mono and not stereo. That's why you can he the Sound's in the background much cleaner because they overdue the mixing and remastering of the CD this is more noticeable when wearing headphones.

There has been some mixed revues about this and some of the other Woodstock sets but I must say that I did really enjoy this from Janis, with worts an all!
I guess most people will be buying this mainly for the live Woodstock disc. I do not think it disapoints. Sure, this may not be her best but it is an honest, soul bearing, gutsy performance and slots nicely amonst those other famous Woodstock performances by so many other artists that, I think, seem to ooze something a little bit special, whether it's something to do with the occasion, the equipment used, the sound engineers or something in the water at the time.
The accompanying studio album may not be the best of her studio albums but you can sense the transition of where she is at and it gives you an indication of what she was like at the time of the Woodstock Festival.
There is some great playing by some great musicians on both discs, packaged rather nicely and a worth while addition to any collection.
It would be nice if there were some more additional Woodstock releases, to the five or six that already exist, to build up a bigger collection of that momentous occasion.

Any lonely soul who may have stumbled upon this eulogy is
probably already a fan so I won't waste time with biographical
detail and cut to the chase. Janis Joplin was a Force of Nature;
no ifs, no buts! One of the most extraordinary voices ever to
have graced the listening world. It is a unique instrument!

This album is a treasure. Whether or not you already own the
studio albums it is worth forking out for this wonderful
Sony "Limited Edition" 2 CD release. What you get for your
money is Ms Joplin's first solo album (after splitting with
Big Brother and the Holding Company) "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic
Blues Again Mama" (1969) and the whole of her live appearance
at the Woodstock festival on the 19th of August 1969.

The Woodstock performance is earth shattering. The voice
roars out of her guts and straight into ours! It blisters
and burns with raw elemental energy. Her delivery of 'Try
(Just A Little Bit Harder)' bristles with electricty. When
she hits those big top notes there is nowhere to hide. They
come at you like guided missiles, striking unerringly in the
centre of your forehead and making your whole spinal column
and nervous system vibrate with raw unbridled pleasure!

Her take on 'Piece Of My Heart' makes every hair (on my
considerably hairy body) stand to attention and her phenomenal
interpretation of 'Summertime' vibrates with white-hot emotion.

The incomparable Ms Joplin never gave less than her all.

One year later she was dead.

Historic. Incomparable. Essential.

I bought this because Woodstock and Joplin were my youth. I didn't remember them well. I suppose you get a little of the atmosphere of Woodstock from this, but Janice is hoarse and rather shouty. Not a great musical experience.
