Love it, warts and all
on 15 March 2018
I have to laugh at all the vinyl fans wanting snap, crackle and fuzz by way of authenticity. I had a version of Foxtrot on bendy plastic with the labels incorrectly applied - as occasionally happened with cheap 1970s records. I used to like "Watcher of the Skies" - hammy as hell but lots of fun with its morse code rhythms. Throw in a bit of vinyl wow and flutter and you needed painkillers for the ear-ache, of course. All that terrible mastering designed to make it sound bearable on a Dansette. Amazingly, the remaster proves there was something worth listening to, though some people complain it "lacks warmth" or something like that. One thing it is worth trying is simply turning the volume down a little, assuming you still have some sense of hearing unlike the perfomers ("What was that again, Phil?").
Of course, you have to put aside the nagging doubt that this is the work of a bunch of pretentious public schoolboys. At least they could write good tunes and they did learn to play their instruments eventually. So, yes, I love it, warts and all.
