Brilliant, moving and historic. An Ideal cast.

This is for me and many others the quintessential 'Tosca' recording. Yes one can pick at the recording quality compared with what is possible today, but the sound quality is perfectly good if one is not a passing bat. Personally I heartily dislike every note perfect recordings as this is not possible in the Opera House or concert Hall. Then we come to the cast and few casts can match the range of talents that this trio can command. Callas is 'Tosca' as Tito Gobbi is 'Scarpia' Guiseppi Di Stephano is in rich and beautiful tones here with a team that had worked together and often. One might have wished for perfection and had Tullio Serafin at the baton....but Di Stabata is very good.
This is the base line on which all other 'Tosca's are judged and one to which I return often for sheer joy of music and drama, no cold icy note perfect perfectionism, just genius in performance. Enjoy......I need not add that at this price heaven is for everyone.
