Boris Godunov is one of my favorite operas. Ghiaurov was a great successor to Christoff. Fortunately, Vishnevskaya is less shouty and squally than she was in later years (as in Britten's War Requiem), and what a treat to hear Talvela in his earlier years. It goes without saying that Karajan's conducting is excellent and that the DG recording is one of the best.

Pinza was a justly famous Boris. His tone is rich and varied and his coloring of the Italian text illuminating. The death scene alone makes this set worth buying. Thorberg and Kullman fill the Polish Act with gorgeous committed singing. Add the great Leonard Warren as Rangoni and you have a desert island quality performance. The score is slightly cut and some things are rearranged, but the sound is very deep and rich for the period with few scratches and pops. And it's LIVE!
