The recording of the second book of Bach's Well-tempered clavier must be one of Schiff's greatest albums. His use of subtle phrasing and well-chosen tempo makes the record a must-have. The development of fugue as an expression of music and answer to the prelude reached a climax in Bach's art of music writing and Schiff's realisation of the music complements Bach perfectly. Go on... now is the perfect time to buy your 3rd copy! (I must admit to having three copies of 'Das wohltemperierte klavier' and of all of them I prefer Schiff simply because of the brilliance and clarity of expression - if you already have the first set you will be able to attest to his subtle artistic expressions).

I have already reviewed Andras Schiff recording of Johann Sebastian Bachs The Well Tempered Clavier Book one and would just like to add that book two of the WTC is the same masterpiece as book one and this recording by Schiff is just as excellent as the recording he did of WTC book one, I can't recomend this highly enough, both the music and the recordings are Blissfull Masterpieces. This is THE music to take with you to the desert island.
Also highly recomended are the books about the WTC. 1 and 2 by Siglind Bruhn and the book Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician by Christoph Wolff
Other brilliant Bach interpreters whom I can recomend are the pianists Glenn Gould,Tatiana Nikolayeva and Dinu Lipatti. The brilliant violinist Hilary Hahn and the great German group
Cologne Musica Antiqua.

I am unreservedly enthusiatic about Schiff's performances of Bach and Book 2 of the '48' is among his best. He captures all the intricacy of this beautiful music and makes one realise again just how 'timeless' Bach's creations are: of the past and yet always modern. The piano sound is wonderfully recorded by Decca and Schiff plays with emotion, agility and, above all, beauty. This and Book 1 are the top choice for the '48'.
