It's a bit churlish of me to give this album only four stars (5 stars should be reserved for masterworks, I believe) as I think Steve is the greatest unsung American singer songwriter of his generation and really deserves to be more widely recognised. He's brilliant in concert too. However, with every Steve Forbert album (as with Dylan, I might add) there are always a few fillers but the stand-out tracks always more than make up for this. 'The Place and the Time' has enough quality songs and singing to make it a worthy 4 stars in my book. Keep 'em coming Steve...

I have all Steve Forbert's albums and rate this latest one on the top ten.
He has lost some of his earlier earnestness and replaced it with a wry wit that maybe comes with age. His commentary on and observation of life are getting better. The track on identity theft, especially, highlights this.
Unfortunately, like a lot of artists who pre-date the CD era, his later albums fall victim to the allure of having 70 minutes capacity and some tracks feel like fillers. There are some that sound like re-workings of previous songs, trying to slot in a new topic; less is definitely more in this instance.
If you like thoughtful and intelligent lyrics, good hooks and great musicianship, then this album is for you.

12 tracks of which 10 are very good to Excellent.
If you are a Forbert fan you'll love this as not a lot different quality wise from his earlier classics.
If you like good singer songwriter with a distinctive voice singing catchy, folky, poppy americana; You'll like this and well worth a punt.
Two tracks: "Stolen identity " and "The coo coo bird" grate a littel for me. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars.

Nice to hear the mellow voice from Steve. Some songs are a bit samey but still a easy listen
