One of the brightest gems in the Toussaint crown
on 26 November 2015
I could have given it five stars but I guess you save that for Kind Of Blue, Pet Sounds, or Natty Dread. Okay, this is not quite that culture-shifting but it is dead good. The great N'awlins songwriter, producer, arranger and all-around good guy was working on a follow-up to this with his pal Joe Henry (Madonna's brother in law!) which will sadly remain unfinished but this sucka is all powerful and a blessing to have in my music collection.
Consisting of cover songs Toussaint loved growing up or discovered in young adulthood The Bright Mississippi is his Pin Ups, his Shadows In The Night, and it is stone beautiful. Full of soft jazzy R&B with gospel overtones I could not write about it well enough to do it justice it reminds me of Charlie Haden's Come Sunday or one of the more reflective releases by John Fahey. Ahh, I knew I could not do this platter justice...dang...just grab a copy and be glad you resided on the planet same time as Allen Toussaint, a man even more of a rock & roll gentleman than Lee Brilleaux or Clem Burke. And that is saying something!!
