Its been a long wait for the follow up to An Iomall but People Like Me is a fabulous release. Alyth has such a stunning voice and her choice of material is faultless. Equally split between Gaelic and English its a very balanced cd, I do prefer the gaelic material but the english language tracks are equally stunning. The superb core musicians: McAlpine Hardie, O'Rourke, Vernal and Fifield are among the best there is. Standout tracks are 1 to 13. Alyth deserves praise and success for producing a classic recording.
I know little (nothing!) about Gaelic music, but bought this record on the strength of a track included on the excellent `This is Navigator Records' sampler.
The record is split between both English and Gaelic numbers and listening on headphones I sometimes don't even notice the switch. I think this is mainly because of the way Alyth uses her voice, it is treated more as an instrument as opposed to adding support to the musical track. This approach delivers a more integrated whole that works very well.
The choice of songs has a very traditional feel, particularly on numbers like `The Queen and the Soldier' and `The beautiful lie'. This is a intriguing album and was not an instant favourite but with repeated listens has become a real grower.
