While I respect the other review on this page - obviously from a serious chess player - as a more casual player Fritz is fine. It can go strong enough for the majority of players, and the Adventure (such that it is, being simply challenges given to the player by various chess pieces, normally Mate-in-2 and the like) is fun; with the Queen's challenge (she swaps the back ranks around at the start) quite taxing (in other words, I haven't beaten her yet).

I've played this program twice against the freeware PC program Arasan (version 11.4) and Fritz was beaten, but not without a struggle when Fritz was set to ELO 2100. In other words, there is a pretty strong chess engine there, and considering the limited RAM of the PS3 (but compensated for by the multi-processors?) this is a good score in my book.

So, in a very limited field of chess programs for the PS3, Fritz is well worthy of your attention.

This game provides a good range of opponents, a library of 2000 classic games and a fair few game modes. On the downside the graphics are a little low res, there's no online play, and you can't properly tilt the 3D boards as the view is fixed. Still its only £15. Its a decent little game if you like chess.

I was very much let down by this product.
The adventure game is for total beginners.
When playing against fritz for an evaluated ELO game you cannot save the game once it has finished, to review any mistakes.
The chess puzzles which are there to be solved have to be done the way they want you to (i.e If you have a checkmate in 3 4 5 or 6 move puzzle there is sometimes 2 or 3 posibble checkmating moves but only 1 is accepted), I have even seen checkmate in 6 puzzles which can be accomplished on the 5th move but obviously this is not allowed.
When you play ELO rated games the fritz program so far has always played the same opening reply as black which gives absolutly no diversity.
I have only had the game for a few days and the max ELO level is 3000. I have beaten the program up to 1800 so far but as I said before if you do the standard E2 to E4 opening the reply from each oposing level will always be the same which makes for a boring game.
Maybe I should just play the program at its maximum and hope that it will variate it's opening replies.
I thought this game would be a bargain at only £15 but I suppose in this world you get what you pay for.

I found the game disappointing because:
There is no on-line facility to play real people.
The 'adventure' playing options is aimed at beginners and does not offer anything to the intermediate or advanced player.
The games database has very few games in it and so has limited use for analysis.
Background music is annoying and cannot be changed.
Tips and hints are for beginners only, thus again does not cater for the intermediate to advanced player.
No advanced tutorials available.

This game has limited depth and is seriously lacking for the intermediate to advanced player. It is unable to match even older PC chess programs like Chessmaster.

The Play Station 3 needs a good dedicated Chess programme,. This is not quite there, but it is fun and gives a good challenging game.

It is also a good introduction to Chess for young people that's why I gave it a 4 overall.

It's a good buy!

If you are an expert stick to the PC ones, but if your a casual player who wants to sit back in a big comfy chair and play chess on his big screen TV then this is a fine game. I enjoyed it, initially I stuck to just playing the computer but I did end up enjoying the little story mode thing too.

So I'd say ignore the bad reviews- this game does what it says on the packet.
