I've been listening to a lot of Martinu's music over the past two years, increasingly moved and impressed both by the quality of much of his ouevre, and by the life-affirming mood which pervades his work; this from a composer who had more than his fair share of adversity. These performances have deepened my appreciation, and fuelled the belief that Martinu was a major 20th Century composer who should be heard and performed much more often. Of the two violin concertos, the second is the one that has made the most impact on me thus far; I'm sure I'll grow to love the first equally. Suk, Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic bring great empathy and sensitivity to these works, as one might expect from Czech musicians of such quality. If having two concertos is not enough, also included is the Rhapsody-Concerto for Viola, and Suk plays this exquisitely... probably the best version of this beautiful work that I have. What a bargain this disc is! Highly recommended!
