APART FROM AN EP OF ITALIAN SONGS IN THE EARLY 1950'S THIS WAS THE ONLY FULL SCALE ALBUM OF ITALIAN THEMED SONGS THAT MR MARTIN RECORDED. YES, THEY ARE AMERICANISED VERSIONS OF MOSTLY FAMOUS ITALIAN MELODIES ('TORNA A SURRIENTO','O SOLE MIO','MATTINATA' ETC) AND THE ARRANGEMENTS ARE DERIVATIVE. ONLY A PASSAGE OR TWO IS SUNG IN ITALIAN. HOWEVER, THE GLORIOUSLY ROMANTIC TREATMENTS AND ABOVE ALL, DINO'S VOICE SOARING OVER IT ALL COMBINE TO MAKE AN ALBUM BELOVED OF ALL DEAN MARTIN FANS AS A CLASSIC. THERE ARE EVEN NEWER VERSIONS OF PREVIOUSLY RECORDED TUNES BUT WHEREAS THE EARLIER VERSIONS MAY HAVE BEEN 'CLEANER' AND PRODUCED FOR SINGLE RELEASE, THE UPDATED VERSIONS SHOW MR MARTIN AT HIS MOST RELAXED AND WARMLY COMPELLING. IF ANY ALBUM COULD BE SAID TO SUM UP HIS APPEAL AND STYLE, THIS IS IT. ESSENTIAL LISTENING.ONCE AGAIN, CAPITOL HAVE ADDED 4 SIMILARLY THEMED SINGLES (BELLE FROM BARCELONA'?) TO INCREASE THE PLAYING TIME.THEY ADD NOTHING HERE EXCEPT TO EMPHASIS THEIR DIFFERENCE FROM THE ALBUM ITSELF.

What a divine album, not a single track I could possibly skip, and no-one but Deano could have made these songs sound so enchanting. Highly recommended for any fan of Dean Martin, and especially for those who would want to hear the very essence of Italy in music.

Cha Cha da Amor was Dean Martin's last album for Capitol records before he left for Sinatra's Reprise label. Due to the fantastic success of Dean's previous album "This time i'm swingin" Capitol decided to pair Dean again with Nelson Riddle and his orchestra, Riddle of course had arranged so many of Sinatra's great Capitol albums and with him on board success was pretty much a guarantee.

This album is very different beast to Dean's previous albums in that all the songs have been arranged with a Latin flavour. This is infact both a help and a hindrance to a certain degree. Whilst this shows how versatile Martin was as a performer, making diverse albums ranging from jazz to country, here sadly the music never really catches fire the way it should, don't get me wrong, this is a very listenable and likeable album but Riddle's arrangements are hampered by the style of music and his orchestra never really gets chance to cut loose like they did on the "This time i'm swingin" album or his great works with Sinatra. This isn't any fault of Riddle's work just that your so locked into the style and rhythm of the music there doesn't leave much room to play around with. Infact most of the tracks segue into each other with little variation in tempo or style leaving the listener a little bored at times,Pleasant but unexciting.

This is still a good album but it's not one you'll probably want to listen and pay attention intently to all the way through. Martin is in fine form vocally and Nelson Riddle does his best with what he can do with the songs but neither showcases each other's talents to the fullest.

Still recommended though.

Possibly the best Dean Martin LP that there is. Superbly recorded when his voice was in it's best form. They added four extra tracks at the end of the original lineup as better value on CD. These tracks are from previous singles and are not as wonderful as the original tracks, however if you like the sound of Dean Martin in italian mood and you havn't got this album...you're missing something!

With a voice as smooth and luxurious as Dino's, what better way to spend an evening curled up on the sofa, with a glass of red wine, listening to him sing "On an Evening in Roma". Perfect listening for a romantic setting!

DEAN'S LAST ALBUM FOR CAPITOL BEFORE SWITCHING TO REPRISE IN 1962 HAS UNFORTUNATELY BEEN ALL BUT FORGOTTEN WHICH IS A SHAME BECAUSE IT IS PLEASANT LISTENING.TEAMED AGAIN WITH NELSON RIDDLE (AFTER THE EXCELLENT 'THIS TIME I'M SWINGIN''ALBUM)IT'S FULL OF SOUTH AMERICAN RHYTHMS AND INSTRUMENTS AND DANCEABLE BACKGROUNDS. NOTHING ARTISTIC HERE THEN, BUT, AGAIN, DEAN'S WAY WITH A SONG TRANSFORMS THE MUNDANE OR REPETITATIVE INTO A CLASS ACT. SEVERAL OF THE NUMBERS HERE HAVE APPEARED IN BEST OF COMPILATIONS THROUGH THE YEARS - 'I WISH YOU LOVE','CHA CHA DE AMOR','LET ME LOVE YOU YONIGHT' ETC AND IT IS NICE TO HAVE THEM ALL TOGETHER AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED. THERE ARE PARTICULARLY FINE VERSIONS OF 'AMOR' AND 'MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE' IN FACT THE WHOLE PACKAGE IS WORTH REPEATED LISTENING. TWO MORE POINTS TO MAKE - THE TRANSFERS TO CD ARE EXCELLENT WITH A PRONOUNCED STEREO EFFECT DELIBERATELY PLACING DEAN'S VOCALS ON ONE SPEAKER. SECONDLY, CAPITOL HAVE ADDED 4 EXTRA TRACKS IRRELEVANT TO THE ALBUM BUT HARD TO OBTAIN ELSEWHERE. ENJOY.

I have always loved Dean Martin's singing but his Italian Love Songs album is my favourite. His laid back, warm and sensuous tone throughout, together with the soft cha cha cha emphasis is a sheer delight. One can only think of all things good about Italy whilst listening - the colours, the music, the hot sun, love etc. etc. etc. Magic!

An exellent romantic ballad singer this double album of ballads finds the performer at the very peak of his singing abilites. It's a pity they used the alternative version of "Return to Me" instead of the original version issued as a single.I find an "Evening In Roma" rather cheesy but 22 out of 24 really good tracks isn't bad.

To get two complete albums of Dean martin on one CD is good. To get proberbly the best two albums he recorded is gold star indeed. His voice is excellant. The backings are superb. The choice of songs is exemplary. These two albums were released in the sixties, one italian love songs, the other lightly latin. I find it difficult to fault such excellance and therfore fully recommend you purchase this immeadiatly!
