At last! I have waited a long time to purchase the complete original series, so thank you to the dutch company who have brought this out. I have only really scratched the surface of this set so far, but the quality of transfer seems to be very good.
As to the programme itself, it is, for me, the very pinnacle of 1960's television. There is nothing to match it for sheer unadulterated style. Stories have a wonderful mixture of comedy and thrills. It is a shame that only 1 episode of the first series exists, but studio-bound series 2 and 3 really do benefit from the excellent chemistry between Patrick Mcnee and Honor Blackman. The standout episode from series 3 for me is "Don't Look Behind You", which is genuinely chilling.
Seasons 4 to 6 show how the series changed direction when it went on to film. Each episode is like a mini movie. Diana Rigg is excellent as Emma Peel. There are so many stand-out episodes from seasons 4 and 5: "Too Many Christmas Trees" "The Town of No Return" and "The Hour That Never Was" are amongst my favourites from the black and white series 4, while the colour series 5 includes "The Joker" "Something Nasty in the Nursery", etc.
The final, protracted season gets off to a slightly shaky start, but once Linda Thorsen settles into her role as Tara King we get some fabulous stories: "Game", "Fog", "Stay Tuned", in fact, too many to mention. All in all, the programme finished on a high and clearly too soon. Thet certainly don't make them like this any more.
This is not cheap, but worth every penny - you are getting one of the most brilliant television series ever made in the UK.
One word of warning. With series 2, 5 and 6, turning off the dutch subtitles is easy, but for series 3 and 4 there is no option for this in the DVD menu, so you will need to get into your player's menu to switch them off. Also, don't be put off by series 4's titles being in French!

This is definitely the best, and most complete, Avengers set for the money. It sells for less than the remastered Emma Peel set alone, which takes up just two of the five slip-cases in this set (which are, in turn, contained in one sturdy outer slip-case). One removes the automatic Dutch subtitles by going into the 'versions' menu.

The first two boxes are devoted to the Honor Blackman episodes. While the picture is less than ideal, this may be as good as it gets. And I've seen worse. The originals appear to have been recorded on some sort of kine-scope and/or primitive video tape process. The entire set is said to be digitally remastered, but there may be little more that can be done to improve these early episodes considering the poor quality of the original material. One must not expect a crisp black and white film image. The pictures are the rather dark, contrasty, fuzzy images typical of early broadcast television. Thanks to picture adjustments on a Philips player (brightening, lowered contrast and color levels), much can be done to make the images watchable. The sound is also primitive. Voices can be lost or confused when the actors turn away from the microphone, or when there are competing ambient sounds.

The third and fourth boxes contain the Diana Rigg episodes for which the series is most famous, and the transfers are near-perfect. Good crisp images in B&W (box three) and then in color (box four), beautifully filmed with the stylish new title sequence, complete with champagne and carnations. The series had hit its peak. Oddly enough, the third box is copied from French transfers and all the opening titles are in French. Copyright issues, I suspect. The episodes remain untouched, however, and are in English. Only the title sequence is affected. Mildly disconcerting, and one of two reasons the set lost a star. The other is the fact that there are no chapter points at all. Relatively small distractions, though, considering one gains the complete series.

There are 22 slim cases in the boxed set, with most containing two discs. That's a lot of viewing for the price. This set is a delight to have, and just about the only way to own all available episodes of this iconic TV program without going into hock.

A must for all Avengers fans. I've only had time to watch most of the first colour series so far but the picture & sound quality is fantastic. As an import from the Netherlands the sleeve notes are in Dutch which doesn't bother me at all and you have to remember to turn off the Dutch subtitles. My major moan is that one of the greatest and most iconic BRITISH TV series is only available as a DUTCH import!!

Thought this was very good value compared to the two-disc sets I had bought previously, and have not been disappointed.

I've only watched about 12 of the episodes to date, and only found one problem - occasionally an episode does not play immediately. This is only a small problem, by returning to the disc menu and selecting again, it has always played.

The scripts etc are in Dutch, as are the notes on the cases, and each episode starts with subtitles enabled. However, the program titles on the menu are in English, and the subtitles can be turned of with my handset.

The earliest episodes do have some problems with sound, especially when the characters face away from the microphone, but it's easy to get used to it, and considering the original recordings are up to 50 years old, very acceptable.

All-in-all, a very good price for the full set of available episodes starting in 1961, and the goods are excellent for any Avengers fan.

I loved The Avengers when I was young and it is great to see the collection again on DVDs! Settings and costumes are really fascinating and the actors are astonishingly good in acting their parts. I also love colours and dialogues, bright and smashing the first, concise and right to the point the second.

Remembering The Avengers as one of the television shows I was not supposed to watch when growing up (on too late - and themes too mature) it was a delight to find the complete collection again. I haven't seen the episodes for many (shall I admit it) decades and it was great to see them again. There are a few less then stellar ones as the series finds it's feet - but once it gets going it's fabulous. It's cheeky, sexy and the woman are cool and competent. The series often delightfully subverts the usual spy tropes - with lots of banter.

The DVDs received all ran and the quality (sound and picture) was reasonable. My only quibble would be that the subtitles are in Dutch - I would have loved English as my father (this was a gift) is a bit hard of hearing and would have appreciated English subtitles. However at the point in time - television studios didn't take care of old shows and I'm thankful that they managed to collate the entire series in any language.

One of the definitive series of the sixties.

Great to finally be able to get the full set of the Avengers series for my brother, he's been missing some of the Tara King set for ages. Cheapo cases, dreadful artwork but finally available.

I couldn't found the information about the subtitle on Amazon when I bought this item. Only found the subtitle is in Dutch when it arrived. I did some research and it seems I cannot get the collection with English subtitle anyway. So I am happy with the purchase and want to keep it.

The Avengers - The complete collection 61-69 is a glorious 39 DVD set not to be missed if you are a fan, and especially if you can't afford to buy the DVD's individually. recommended.
